Having the right ventilation set-up is vitally important to controlling temperature and humidity. Problems like disease, poor growth, yields and pest control issues are associated with a lack in control of these two factors. Ensuring there is a good supply of fresh air in indoor growing areas can be the difference between success and failure and therefore a need for the element of control.

When growing in an enclosed space, we advise using both an extractor fan and an intake fan. The extractor will remove the moist, warm air (high humidity) along with other respiratory by-products and helps to replenish carbon dioxide. The intake fan should be placed at the opposite end of the growing environment to help control humidity and temperature and introduce carbon dioxide into the area.

The purpose of the Marix Disc is to prevent compost or soil from leaving the pot, keeping the system clean & the AQUAvalve free from debris. They will also provide minimum protection from escaping roots. Although the Marix Discs will last several seasons it is advisable to replace the discs at the beginning of each season, this will prevent any disease from being transferred if present.

Activated Carbon Pellets are great for extracting organic compounds from the air.

Carbon filters incorporating activated carbon pellets are the ideal filtration system solution for hydroponic gardens.  Apart from filtering air, carbon filters also trap odour molecules, mainly produced by plants such as chilli peppers, orchids, herbs & spices and thus serve a dual purpose of improving air circulation and keeping the cultivating area odour free.

After 12 to 18 months of use, the filters begin to lose their effectiveness and need to be replaced.

Carbon is activated by burning it in an oxygen-depleting atmosphere. Similar to how wood smoulders in a stove when only a small amount of oxygen is present. In a kiln it is similar, but there is much less oxygen and the temperatures are much higher. When the carbon is exposed to these high temperatures in the presence of little oxygen and with excess steam, microscopic pores open up within the carbon. This creates a greater surface area and charges the carbon with positive electrons which attracts the negatively charged ions in the organic compound (i.e. smells and gases).

ALL activated carbon is rendered ineffective in an environment with humidity levels over 85%. Keep humidity levels below 80% or the odour absorbing reaction will be unable to take place inside the carbon.

Filter 5mm

Filter 5mm to be fitted to outlet pipe from reservoir to filter water. Will fit 5mm (O.D.) pipe. For use with Autopot pot sets and system that use the original Aquavalve with its 3mm (I.D.) inlet. The new Aquavalve 5 has a 5mm (I.D.) inlet and uses 9mm (O.D) Autopot piping and 9mm (O.D piping) Filters.

The Filter 5mm should be used with the 30 ltr & 47 ltr tanks. It is simply inserted inside the tank once the 5mm pipe is pushed through the 6mm Top Hat Grommet at the bottom of the tank. It can be easily serviced and will float to the top if it comes detached from the tube, this will not happen if you make sure you have pushed the filter firmly into the tube.

The sponge in side  filter is designed to trap any particles that would clog up your system. Simply clean out sponge every 4 weeks.

These bends are 35 mm long, 13mm high and come in a variety of random colours. Sold individually.

Plant Bends enable you to train leaves or stems to ensure a plant receives as much light as possible. They offer flexible short and side truss support for truss stems and can be attached at an early stage of growth. Plant Bends are bendable, so the stem does not have to be forced through the support and they bend with the truss as the stem grows.

This little device allows you to gently bend the branches of your plants so they can receive more light than if they grew naturally. As the plant grows, they are clipped to the stems which change their growing direction. By clipping on more, you can sculpt the shape of your plant to provide maximum light penetration and increase flower development. After a week or so they can be removed and the bend will remain, they can then be used elsewhere on the plant.

Rainbow Coloured Plant Benders are best for use as early as possible in the plants life when the branches are smaller and more pliable. As a plant matures, its branches and stems stiffen and can become more woody. These are far harder to train and can easily snap if they bend too far. With a bit of forward planning, these Plant Bends can be put to great use. However, if your plants have become too big for them, you may need to come up with another plan!

The life of a Boveda product depends on how hard it has to work. The more moisture it has to give up, the harder it has to work and the more it takes away from the product’s life span.  You’ll know it’s time to replace Boveda when it’s no longer pliable.

It’s impossible for Boveda to over-humidify beyond the RH on the pack. That’s why our usage instructions talk about minimums, not maximums. There’s no such thing as using “too much”. More than the minimum will just last longer.

Boveda doesn’t need to be activated or maintained. Once the Boveda pack becomes rigid, it’s out of water and needs to be replaced. This could mean weeks to years, depending on the package or container, how much the container is opened/closed and the ambient environment.

Below are recommendations for the various humidity levels: These recommendations are dependent on how dry the herbs are when placed in airtight containers together with a Boveda pack. Boveda recommends drying to around 11% before placing into airtight containers with Boveda packs.

58% Relative Humidity
High humidity climates i.e Cape Town (Winter), Durban (All year)
Vaporiser users seem to prefer the 58%. Apparently it makes it smoother.
If herbs that are not dry enough are placed into a jar, the 58% will be more effective at dehumidifying the jar.

62% Relative Humidity
Low humidity climates i.e Johannesburg (All year) Cape Town (Summer)
If herbs that are too dry are placed into a jar, the 62% will be more effective at replenishing moisture in the flower.

All herbs work beautifully but some will react differently to the different RH level. So testing is the best practice.

One more thing to note. One should never mix a 58% and a 62% in the same jar, as the packs will work against each other and run out very quickly.

Biogrow Copper Soap is a natural organic fungicide.  Provides preventative control of downy and powdery mildew, black spot, rust, botrytis rot and early and late blight.

This product is a patented, fixed copper fungicide, made by combining a soluble copper fertilizer with a naturally occurring fatty acid.  The copper and the fatty acid combine to form a copper salt of the fatty acid, known technically as soap.

Biogrow Copper Soap fungicide controls many common diseases using low concentrations of copper, down as low as 90 ppm.  The net result is an excellent vegetable, fruit and ornamental fungicide.  It decomposes to form soluble copper, and fatty acid, both of which can be used by microbes and plants.

The copper soap is suited for use in domestic circumstances, both indoors and outdoors.  This product controls diseases of a wide range of plants, including many vegetable, fruit and ornamentals.  As with most fungicides it acts to protect plants from infection.  Therefore, it is important to have the copper soap on the leaf, flower or fruit before the pathogen is able to cause an infection.  This product will control fungal diseases such as : powdery mildew and downy mildew on vegetables and ornamentals, rust on ornamentals, late blight on potatoes and tomatoes, and Peronospora and downy mildew on grapes.

Additional Preventative measures that can be taken to help prevent plants from falling prey to molds later on in life:

  • Expose them to Trichoderma Fungus (a fungus that is beneficial to a plant when introduced into the root zone)
  • Apply a silicon plant supplement on a regular basis from a young age, right throughout the plants’ life cycle. Silicon strengthens plant cell wall, amongst other things and this will it harder for molds and mildew to take hold on the plant surfaces.
