Liquid pH Down

Generic Bottle

Liquid pH Down is used to decrease pH in the nutrient mix. Consists of Phosphoric Acid.

Instructions: Add in small amounts of Liquid pH Down until the pH is reduced to the required level (5.5-6.5). The acid should always be added to the water and not the other way round, as acid splashes can be extremely painful.

Use in conjunction with a pH meter or good quality pH test kit.

Allow water to circulate for about 15 minutes before testing pH.

Liquid pH Down is highly concentrated and usually goes a long way for the average home gardener. Always test with small amounts at a time checking the PH level each time as well to see how much it was lowered. Add small increments at a time until you reach the desired PH level.

Extremely corrosive, avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not ingest. Keep away from Children.

What is pH?

A measure of acidity or alkalinity of water soluble substances (pH stands for ‘potential of Hydrogen’). A pH value is a number from 1 to 14, with 7 as the middle (neutral) point. Values below 7 indicate acidity which increases as the number decreases, 1 being the most acidic.

Acidity and alkalinity are extremely important factors in your crop’s water and root zone.  A pH reading out of that range indicates conditions that very much decrease your plants’ ability to take in nutrients, grow well and produce large harvests.

  • Measures moisture content of soil or substrate, so that you will know when you need to water.
  • Measures pH of soil or substrate, enabling you take appropriate action when needed.
  • The meter also has a built in light sensor ( 0 – 2000 ), with “2000” equating to around 40 000 Lux in our own tests.

The 3 Way Soil Meter is ready to use and requires no batteries.

When using, make sure prong tips are clean and ensure that the prongs of the meter penetrate at least 4 inches into the soil or substrate. ( Not suitable to test the pH of liquids ). Clean prongs and prong tips after use.

Remember to take readings from different parts of each container, allowing 60 seconds for meter to settle after insertion.

During pH measurement:

A reading of 7 is pH neutral.

For conventional soils in planted beds:

Between 3 and 7 is acidic. To make the soil more alkaline, for every 1 pH add approx 300g per square meter of Lime.

Between 7 and 10 is Alkaline. To make the soil more acidic, for every 1 pH add approx 70g per square meter of Sulphate of Ammonia.

Read up on your crop’s specific needs regarding pH. (Usually around 6 pH)

Grommet

Grommets are used to create watertight seals for the plumbing of hydroponic systems such as NFT systems, DWC systems, Dutch Bucket systems, water reservoirs etc.

A hole is drilled and the Grommet is inserted into the hole. Piping is then pushed through the grommet which will form a watertight seal.

Irrigation Piping, Ring Grommet and Top Hat Grommet measurements (approximate, in mm) follow below:

Based on the above the following grommet & piping combinations are advised:

9mm Autopot Piping (for use with Autopot Aquavalve 5): 9mm Top Hat Grommet

5mm irrigation piping: 6mm Ring Grommet or 6mm Top Hat Grommet

12mm irrigation piping: 16mm Top Hat Grommet works beautifully. 12mm Ring Grommet fit will be a very tight fit, while a 15mm Ring Grommet’s fit could be a little loose (This could be countered by using an insert fitting (eg. straight connector/T-piece/elbow) inside the piping at the point where it goes through the grommet, to flare out the piping and create the waterproof seal)

15mm irrigation piping: 19mm Top Hat Grommet, or 20mm Ring Grommet

20mm irrigation piping: –

25mm white PVC electrical conduit: 25mm Ring Grommet

 

Hole Saw Sizes for Grommets – Please note: these hole saw sizes are for flat surfaces, not for curved surfaces. A slightly smaller hole can be tried on curved surfaces to prevent possible leakage due to the curving of the grommet on the curved surface. (Drilling test holes and testing if seals are watertight is always advised)

It is not recommended that Petroleum Jelly is used as a lubricant. A silicon lubricant, although more expensive, is better. Olive oil can also be used. Throwing grommets into HOT water before installing also helps a lot.

Please note if grommet is fitted and then taken out a number of times, it may stretch and warp.
