Generally, manufacturers name and rate the unit based on the amount of water it can remove from air in 24 hours, but based on air with a temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius and with an RH of 80%. These types of conditions may be a reality in really tropical summers in places like China and Hong Kong, but is far from what the conditions inside your average grow area are like. There are even some manufacturers that rate their units’ performance based on 32 degree Celsius air with 95% RH! These ratings are also based on air where the RH remains the same – as a dehumidifier cannot magically continue to remove water from air with little to no water in it.

As a general rule of thumb, halve the rating of any dehumidifier to get an idea of how much water it will remove from a “normal” grow room environment in 24 hours.

Dehumidifiers are best suited for closed-loop growing set-ups, or spaces with little ventilation – no number of dehumidifiers will dry out a space where potentially wet air is constantly being ventilated into the space from outside.

Neoseiulus Californicus

Neoseiulus Californicus

Neoseiulus Californicus SachetNeoseiulus Californicus SachetNeoseiulus Californicus Sachet

Neoseiulus Californicus is a predatory mite supplied by BioBee South Africa, who are actively providing IPM solutions which reduce the use of pesticides for both conventional and bio-organic agriculture in the country.

Sold by Hydroponic.co.za in 5g sachets, which are hooked onto plant stems close to leaves. The mites will emerge from the holes in the top of the sachets over a number of days, eager to find food and help with the elimination of the following pests:

  • Two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus Urticae)
  • Fruit spider mite (Panonychus Ulmi)
  • Citrus red mite (Panonynchus Citri)
  • Begonia mite (Tarsonemus Pallidus)
  • Broad mite (Polyphagotarsonemus Latus)

Full dispersion and noticeable effects may take between 2 and 3 weeks, depending on each unique situation. Make sure that the holes of each sachet are indeed open, to ensure that the mites will be able to crawl out of it easily. (Holes can be enlarged slightly, using a pen or pencil). For faster dispersion, the sachets can be torn open and the contents sprinkled onto the plant’s leaves.

Neoseiulus Californicus should be shipped and stored at temperatures ranging from around 6 – 16 °C and the sachets should be viable for up to 3 weeks after the production date printed on each sachet.

  • etc.

Mite Description:

Neoseiulus californicus are translucent and range in color from pale orange to peach. The nymphs resemble the adults except that they are smaller and cannot reproduce. Their eggs are oblong, transparent and white to dirty-white in color. Adult predatory mites, nymphs and larvae actively search for their prey and suck them empty. All stages of Neoseiulus californicus prefer to eat younger stages of host mites and adult females can consume fifteen to twenty spider mite eggs per day. Neoseiulus californicus can also feed and survive on Thrips and can survive for up to 3 – 4 weeks without food and therefore very good for prophylactic treatments and maintaining low populations of Red Mite and Red spider mite. Neoseiulus californicus tolerates high temperatures and low humidity levels.

Please note… not recommended for use on Tomatoes, as the trichomes of a Tomato plant give of a substance that is irritating to these mites.

Ducting

Ducting

Ducting  is used to connect inline fans with items like spigot flanges, Air Carbon scrubbers or other fittings .

This flexible aluminium Ducting is specifically produced for low and medium pressure heating, cooling, ventilation, exhaust and air conditioning systems. It is produced from multi-layer aluminium, strengthened with high tension hard steel spring wire. It has high elasticity and flexibility. It can be easily fitted to circular, oval or rectangular connectors.

Keep in mind: It is ideal to keep your ducting pulled as tight as possible to reduce resistance thus ensuring maximum airflow. The more bends and corners you put in, the more you are reducing the fans capability.

Sizes: 102mm, 127mm, 152mm, 203mm , 254mm, 317mm

Prices are per meter, max length of single piece of ducting = 10 meters. ( Example: if ordering 15 meters, you will receive 1 x 10 meter length and 1 x 5 meter length )

Air Tubing

Air Tubing

Air Tubing or air piping is used to connect air stones and air curtains to air pumps and air compressors, which in turn are used to aerate and agitate nutrient solutions in hydroponic growing systems, like DWC‘s (Deep Water Culture) or NFT’s (Nutrient Film Technique), etc. This provides oxygen to plant roots, helps prevent algae formation and prevents nutrients from settling to the bottom of feeding tanks over time.

5mm Air Tubing, made from clear flexible plastic or silicone, is compatible with most air pumps and air stones, and is sold per meter.

Regular plastic air piping is more rigid than the silicon air piping, but may form permanent “flat spots” over time if the piping remains bent for long periods – for example, when running the piping underneath a reservoir lid.

Silicon Air Piping will keep its original shape much better, but is softer and more pliable – which means that it can more easily be pressed shut and care will have to be taken to install the piping properly, so that it DOES NOT get pressed shut by a reservoir lid, for instance.

Air tubing should not be used to channel water, as the semi-transparent material will allow light though it and this will cause algae to grow inside the piping, which may spread to other parts of the system. This may not be a problem if present in small quantities, but will rob your plants of oxygen and nutrition when out of hand.

Always make sure that your air pump is installed HIGHER than the top of your water reservoir, so that water cannot run into the air pump form the reservoir and cause an electrical short-circuit. Alternatively, use Air Pump Check Valves to prevent water from getting into your air pump. If your system is set up outside, make sure that your air pump and electrical supply is properly waterproofed.

TIP: Air tubing can also be attached to a suitable syringe and can then be used to draw exact nutrient doses from bottles of organic or hydroponic nutrient ranges.

Arrow Drippers

Arrow Drippers

Using Arrow Drippers in your garden or garden pots is an easy method of watering.

Arrow Drippers are connected with 3mm black piping to a Manifold (using 5mm Threaded-Threaded Connectors), for example…….

A fantastic way to water clusters of pots from a central point.

Drip irrigation is a form of irrigation that saves water and fertilizer by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of many different plants, either onto the soil surface or directly onto the root zone. It is done through narrow tubes that deliver water directly to the base of the plant. It is chosen instead of surface irrigation for various reasons, often including concern about minimizing evaporation.

Flow-rate under adequate line pressure is around 2lt per hour, but it is always advised to do flow-rate tests for every individual set-up, esp. when using pond pumps, which do not generate a lot of water pressure.

Features and Benefits:

  • Allows for exact watering using electrical timers with water pumps.
  • Allows placement of drippers exactly where necessary.
  • Allows maximum flexibility in greenhouse and nurseries.

4.0 pH Calibrating Solution

Generic Bottle

4.0 pH Calibrating Solution is suitable for all makes and models of pH pens and meters.

4.0 pH Calibrating Solution is easy to use!

Just dip your electrode into a small amount of the buffer and adjust the meter to read 4.0.

Do not reuse solution.

The characteristic of a pH electrode will change with time due to electrode coating and aging.  And even a pH electrode would be stable over time, pH electrodes cannot be produced with identical characteristics.

In practice the response of a real pH sensor does not exactly follow the Nernst equation. This difference between the theoretical and actual behavior of a pH electrode must be compensated for. A calibration is required to match the pH meter to the current characteristics of the used pH sensor

The main factors that degrade the performance of an electrode are coating, contamination and aging. How often you need to calibrate your electrode depends mainly on these factors and, of course, of the accuracy you require from your measurement.

How often do I need to calibrate my pH meter?
This depends on the type of products being measured, the maintenance and the required accuracy. It may be weekly, daily or before each use.

Generally speaking, a pH electrode that is well maintained can last up to 2 years.

Ideal for Micro Herbs

  • Growing Microgreens

Microgreens are simply greens, lettuces, and herbs that are harvested when they are quite young — generally when they are approximately 5 – 10cms tall.

What Can You Grow as a Microgreen?
Basically, you can grow any lettuce, salad green, or herb as a microgreen. It’s easy to start with a pre-packaged seed mix.  We have an Eden Seeds mix which contains Cabbage, Broccoli, Cress, Kale, Mizuna, Mustards Red and Green, Radish, Tatsoi.

    How To Grow Microgreens
Microgreens are very easy to grow. You can grow them outside, in a garden bed or in containers, or inside on a sunny windowsill.

If you are planting microgreens in a garden bed, loosen the soil and rake it smooth. Scatter your seed mix so that the seeds are about 5mm apart — remember, we’re harvesting them very young, so they don’t need a lot of room. Once the seed is scattered over the area, cover it with about 5mm of soil and water gently but thoroughly.

If you’re planting in a container, the first step is to choose a container that is at least five centimeters deep and as large in diameter as you want. Fill it with a good quality organic potting mix, and smooth the soil. Scatter the seeds so that they are about 5mm apart, and cover with about 5mm of soil. Water gently but thoroughly, and place your container in a spot where it will get at least four hours of sunlight.

In either case, do not let the soil dry out, and be sure to remove any weeds so that the tiny greens don’t have to compete with them for water and nutrients. Because you’ll be harvesting the greens so young, you don’t really need to fertilize them while they’re growing. If you’ve got plenty of organic matter in your garden bed, that will be perfect.  Microgreens grow for such a short period of time that they are rarely bothered by pests and diseases. However, if you are growing brassicas in your mix (mustard, kale, etc.) and cabbage worms are a problem, you may want to cover your microgreens with a net (a piece of old curtain mesh is ideal) cover to protect them.

    Harvesting Microgreens
The best time to harvest microgreens is when they’ve developed their first set of true leaves (the first ones are seed leaves, and don’t look anything like the actual leaves of the plant), which is generally about ten days to two weeks after planting. To harvest, simply snip the microgreens just above soil level.

Unlike mesclun or baby greens, you won’t be able to get additional harvests from one planting of microgreens. Because the plants haven’t had much time to develop, and you’re snipping off everything except the very bottom of the stem, the plant has no way to generate new growth. You can plant another crop after harvest by simply scattering fresh seed and covering it with soil. You don’t need to remove the old roots; they are good sources of organic matter.

As you can see, microgreens are simple to grow, and provide you with a quick harvest for not much work. You can add them to salads, sandwiches, or stir-fries, and it’s much cheaper to grow your own than it is to purchase them. Experiment with different mixes, adding the varieties you like best. They’re definitely deserving of a spot in your garden.
