More on DLI (Daily Light Integral) …

When using LED grow lights like the HydroDepot Quantum Board 220W for fall-flowering plants, it is crucial to understand and manage the Daily Light Integral (DLI). DLI is the total amount of light that plants receive over a 24-hour period, measured in moles of light per square meter per day (mol/m²/day). Properly adjusting DLI is essential for optimizing plant growth during different stages.

During the vegetative (veg) stage, fall-flowering plants require a higher DLI to promote strong, leafy growth. This typically involves providing intense light for longer durations, such as 18-24 hours of light per day. The hanging distance of the LED grow lights should be kept at 18-24 inches above the canopy to ensure that the plants receive adequate light without experiencing heat stress or light burn.

As the plants transition to the blooming stage, the light requirements change. Fall-flowering plants need a lower DLI with a spectrum shift towards red wavelengths to encourage flower development. The light schedule is typically reduced to 12 hours on and 12 hours off, mimicking the shorter daylight hours of fall. The hanging distance should also be adjusted to 12-18 inches above the canopy to provide sufficient light to the flowering sites while preventing any potential damage from excessive light intensity.

Managing DLI effectively ensures that fall-flowering plants receive the appropriate amount of light energy required for each growth stage. During the blooming phase, slightly reducing the light intensity and adjusting the light duration not only conserves energy but also replicates natural conditions, leading to healthier plants and more abundant blooms. By fine-tuning the DLI, growers can significantly enhance the growth and flowering potential of their fall-flowering plants.
